The EFCC reports that Yahaya Bello’s children’s tuition at Abuja American School was reimbursed in the amount of $760,000

The American International School Abuja (AISA) has reportedly reimbursed Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi state, for the tuition his children paid to attend the school, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

As previously reported by LIB, on Tuesday, April 23, Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the EFCC, disclosed during a press conference in Abuja that the former governor had used funds from the Kogi state government to pay $760,910 in advance for the education of five of his children. The institution issued a statement after the information became public, pledging to reimburse the EFCC for the costs.

The Lagos zonal commander of the EFCC received a letter from the institution stating that $845,852 had been paid in tuition “since the 7th of September 2021 to date.”

AISA stated that since it has already subtracted educational services previously provided, the amount to be reimbursed is $760,910.

“Please forward to us an official written request, with the authentic banking details of the EFCC, for the refund of the above-mentioned funds as previously indicated as part of your investigation into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family.

Since the 7th September 2021 to date, $845,852.84 (Eight Hundred and Forty-Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty Two US Dollars and eighty four cents) in tuition and other fees has been deposited into our Bank account.

We have calculated the net amount to be transferred and refunded to the State, after deducting the educational services rendered as $760,910.84. (Seven Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ten US Dollars and Eighty Four cents).

No further additional fees are expected in respect of tuition as the students’ fees have now been settled until they graduate from ASIA.”

Dele Oyewale, an EFCC official, attested to the school’s reimbursement of the funds in an interview with The Cable.

“The funds have been deposited into an official account.” Reportedly, Dele Oyewale said
