The Labour Party (LP) has encouraged President Bola Tinubu to seek assistance with the rising cost of living and challenges in the country before they become uncontrollable.
The party expressed serious worry over how millions of Nigerians have been dealing with the situation of food shortages since the turn of the year. This comes as the party calls on Tinubu to stop certain of his aides from making provocative, incendiary, reckless, and unjustified statements that might hurt the sensibilities of ordinary Nigerians.
Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, confirmed this in a statement published on Monday.
The opposition party said Tinubu and his staff should acknowledge they’ve run out of ideas and seek assistance, as no amount of propaganda would change the truth that more Nigerians are sinking into poverty.
The party expressed concern that critical goods such as rice, garri, wheat, garri, and protein had seen exponential price hikes since January.
According to the LP, there is a sense of despair throughout the country, with the immediate repercussions of the crisis rising criminality, particularly among teenagers, and suicide rates on the rise.
Ifoh stated that “it is either that the government is bereft of ideas on how to check this unfolding catastrophe or that it chose to continue to act as if it is still campaigning for office,” emphasizing that it is not the time for politics.
“You can’t run a government solely on whims. The current economic turbulence is the outcome of this faulty assessment. Unfortunately, in the middle of all of this, the All Progressives Congress administration has increased expenditure on its elected officials’ extravagant lifestyles, and corruption among government officials has never been greater,” the statement stated in part.
