The day following a disheartening loss to Udinese at home, Maurizio Sarri announced his resignation as Lazio manager on Tuesday, as reported by Sky Italy.
Sarri had been Lazio’s manager for three years, and his contract was set to expire at the end of the following campaign. According to Sky Italy, Lazio has not publicly accepted Sarri’s resignation yet.
Tuesday’s training was delayed, and President Claudio Lotito will speak with Sarri at a later time.
According to Sky Italy, Lazio may consider Tommaso Rocchi and Cristian Brocchi as potential Sarri replacements, while former German international Miroslav Klose is said to be open to accepting a deal through June.
Last month, Lazio defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, but they were eliminated after losing 3-0 in Germany.
In January, they were defeated 3-0 by Inter Milan, the eventual winners, in the Super Cup semi-finals as well.
Lazio has advanced to the Italian Cup semifinals, where it will play Juventus, the previous team of Sarri, the following month.
Despite guiding the Bianconeri to a tenth consecutive title in his one season in command, Sarri was sacked by Juventus in 2020.
