The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fined Bayelsa United N3 million for a security breach and failed to deploy sufficient crowd control measures during their matchday 37 versus Shooting Stars on Sunday.
Bayelsa United fans encroached on the pitch during the second half of the match at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, forcing the game to be suspended for a few minutes.
Okiemute Odah, goalie for Shooting Stars, was also attacked by a home team supporter.
Bayelsa United was ordered to pay Odah N250,000 in compensation and to identify and punish the perpetrator of the assault within 48 hours of receiving the notice of sanctions.
The NPFL further noted that Bayelsa United’s inability to identify, prosecute, and present evidence of prosecuting the offender could result in extra fines.
The league also declared that the offender, who is still being identified and prosecuted, will be barred from attending any NPFL games for the next year.
Bayelsa United has 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the penalty.
