Following a debate in the House of Representatives, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu presented House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
In compliance with the National Order of Precedence, the Speaker has been upgraded to GCON by the President, who earlier bestowed the title of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) onto the Speaker and the Deputy Senate President.
The House of Representatives made a historical mistake and oversight, which sparked a discussion about the president’s choice.
Later, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Speaker, the President of the Senate, and other key members of the National Assembly will be formally bestowed with their new titles.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga said, “President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives’ position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight.
“Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, in accordance with the National Order of Precedence.”
