Esme Morgan, an England defender, has agreed to join the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League for an unknown price after leaving Manchester City.
The 23-year-old has spent her entire career at City, where she made her first-team debut in September 2017 as a 16-year-old, with the exception of a loan spell at Everton during the 2019-20 season.
Morgan, who is eligible to join her new squad on July 15, has participated in 87 appearances for City across all competitions, winning the Conti Cup and FA Cup, and received her maiden England call-up in September 2020.
Morgan stated: “I wanted to join the Spirit because they have the ambition and tools to be the best team in the NWSL, and trying to achieve that will be a great but enjoyable challenge.
“On an individual level too, the opportunity to work under Jonatan (Giraldez), one of the world’s best coaches, is really exciting and I look forward to learning from him and pushing myself to become the best player I can be, hopefully helping the team to success.”
