Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has pledged to implement the national minimum wage of N70,000 for state workers. He warned labor representatives not to make snap decisions, stating that his administration had not complied with the wage rise and that payments from the federal government had not yet begun. The state administration is ready to enact the new minimum wage.
He said, “Even the federal government, which authorized the new wage, has not yet begun payments as the modalities are still being worked out. Once the procedures are clear, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and my administration will collaborate to determine the best way to proceed with the implementation.”
Governor Idris confirmed that the N500 annual development levy, a holdover from former Sokoto state, was the only money withheld from August salaries, authorized by law. Only N11 million was taken out of these deductions. Murtala Usman, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, praised Idris as the nation’s “most labor-friendly” leader.
