Nigerian artist Joseph Akinfenwa Donus, often known as Joeboy, has said that he was unprepared for success when he rose to prominence.
He was taken aback when his first hit song, ‘Baby’, became an international sensation just three months after its release.
He admitted that when he first got famous, he didn’t think anyone would recognize him.
In the most recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast, Joeboy stated that his celebrity came unexpectedly and that he had to relocate from his neighborhood to adjust to his new status.
The singer said: “I wasn’t ready when ‘Baby’ blew. I had to adapt to get used to fame. It was so sudden. I dropped the song [‘Baby’] in March [2019], and by June I was already doing shows in countries I thought they don’t listen to Nigerian music. Countries like Tanzania, and Uganda. In three months!”
