A “family values and the protection of minors” law that would severely restrict LGBTQ rights has been approved by Georgian MPs.
The ruling populist party, Georgian Dream, submitted a measure that forbids same-sex weddings, adoptions by same-sex couples, care that is gender affirming, public support of LGBTQ+ relationships and individuals, and negative media portrayals of LGBTQ+ people.
Along with banning them from movies and publications, it also forbids Pride celebrations and the flying of the rainbow flag in public.
Leaders of the Georgian Dream contend that the nation’s ancient moral ideals ought to be protected by the legislation.
Director of the campaign group Tbilisi Pride Tamara Jakeli predicted that the measure will probably result in the closure of her group.
In Georgia, there is controversy around LGBT rights due to the prevalence of same-sex relationship rejection in polls and the frequent physical attacks on Pride marches. Salome Zourabichvili, the president, has stated that she will reject the law; but, the administration and its supporters possess sufficient seats in parliament to override her decision. Georgia has approved the law in line with Russia.
