The Bauchi State Police Command has reported that one of its officers was hurt during the violent nationwide End Bad Governance protest on August 1.
Auwal Musa Mohammed, the State Commissioner of Police, announced this on Friday, August 2, while providing an update on the protest in the state.
He also revealed that 60 demonstrators were arrested as a result of their violent actions during the rally.
Auwal Musa stated that the arrests were made owing to the demonstrators’ violations of public order and unlawful assembly, as they did not obtain police permission before beginning on the activity.
The Commissioner further stated that the Bauchi State Police Command arrested more than 50 demonstrators, including women, following the ‘End Bad Governance Protest’ in the state capital.
“Fifty-two of them among the protesters were arrested; they were arrested for being violent and very unruly. They tried to disturb public peace, not based on our arrangement with them,” the CP stated.
He also revealed that one of his police officers was injured, emphasising that the demonstrators grew violent, participating in phone theft and property vandalism throughout the city.
He claimed that after being scattered, the more than three thousand protestors reassembled and attempted to force their way into the government house.
“They were stoning our policemen. They have injured some of our policemen, so we had to act fast. The governor would have addressed them if they were not unruly,”
“We acted professionally, and we did not kill anybody. The protesters used women and children as shields, but we were able to overcome and subdue them.”
