Emmanuel Amuneke has backed Ademola Lookman to win the CAF Player of the Year award, following Victor Osimhen’s victory last year.
Lookman, a 26-year-old Nigerian winger, has been tipped to win the award this year after a remarkable campaign for both his club and country.
He scored three goals in seven appearances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was a hero of Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League success, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Amuneke believes Lookman is the right candidate to win the award, as he has been able to consolidate himself with African football.
Amuneke urges continued support for players in Europe and local leagues to form the ecological system that governs football and for it to strive.
Amuneke said to SportsBoom, “He’s in line if he continues the way he is doing,”.
“I watched the last game against Rwanda, and his performance was outstanding. It shows that he has been able to consolidate himself with African football.
“When I won it, I think Ikpeba won it again, and then Kanu. If a Nigerian win it next, it is definitely a joyous one. It’s a thing of great motivation that shows the future is bright for our young players.
“We need to continue to support our players, both in Europe and in our local leagues. We all need one another to form the ecological system that governs our football, for our football to strive.”
