Despite protests, the Borno administration immediately enforces a 24-hour curfew

A 24-hour curfew has been implemented in Borno State, with immediate effect, by the government in reaction to the ongoing protests against the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.

The state police command’s public relations officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, imposed the curfew on Thursday with the goal of preventing the protests from spreading further. Daso said that an official statement on the curfew will be released shortly.

Police in Abuja, the capital of the country, earlier today deployed tear gas on protestors taking part in the #EndBadGovernance protest, which were sparked by worries about the worsening economic conditions. The demonstrations, which started at the MKO Abiola Stadium, moved to Eagle Square right before the police commissioner’s deadline.

The order issued by Police Commissioner Benneth Igwe to move the peaceful assembly inside the stadium was met with disapproval from the protestors. They objected, saying they couldn’t enter the stadium and weren’t obstructing traffic. The commissioner was notified by human rights attorney Mr. Deji Adeyanju that demonstrations were allowed at the National Stadium, not inside of it. Protesters also voiced worries about unfairly being held responsible for any damage that might be done to the stadium.
