Cristiano Ronaldo is not voting for the honor, according to Ballon d’Or head Vincent Garcia, who said he is “very upset” with award decisions.
Lionel Messi has won the accolade eight times, with Ronaldo coming in second with five. Since 2017, he has not been voted the world’s best football player. A recent Instagram post asserting that Messi had won three Ballons d’Or too many was liked by Ronaldo.
For the first time in 21 years, neither Messi nor Ronaldo reached the 30-man shortlist this year. Although Garcia stated that winners are entitled to attend all upcoming ceremonies, some people are quite dissatisfied with the award decisions.
Garcia told The Times: “Winners have the right to come back to all future ceremonies but they don’t all come, some are very upset with us.
“I don’t know for certain Cristiano is, I don’t talk to him directly, but I know for example that former winners vote for the Kopa Trophy – for the best young player – and Cristiano didn’t vote last year and he didn’t vote this year either.”
