Gombe State’s governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, announced that the state would form a standing committee to deliberate on the new federal minimum wage.
Recall how, in July of last year, the governor had questioned if his state could afford to pay the just agreed N70,000?
Yahaya made this revelation on Saturday following a courtesy call to Vice President Kashim Shettima. Ismaila Misilli, the Gombe Government House’s Director-General of news Affairs, signed the news release.
According to Yahaya, the standing committee is investigating ways to implement the new national minimum wage for workers. The group is led by his deputy, Manassah Jatau.
A portion of the statement stated, “Most states have set up committees; in Gombe, we have a standing committee headed by the Deputy Governor. They are working with the labour unions to ensure that we do the right thing.
“It is a law, but implementation normally involves consequential adjustment, and each state has to follow the process properly to get it right.”
