Following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Niger Republic from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the regional body’s Foreign Affairs Ministers are gathering in Abuja, Nigeria.
The ministers are also scheduled to discuss the massive protests in Senegal that followed the suspension of the country’s presidential elections.
Dr. Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, noted that the conference will discuss the three nations’ notification of withdrawal as well as wider implementation.
According to DAILY POST, the three military-led West African countries announced their immediate exit from ECOWAS on January 27, accusing the organization of posing a threat to its members.
