As unacceptable to the people of the region, President Bola Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs has been opposed by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide.
In the sake of economic stability and regional growth, the group has urged Tinubu to reevaluate the decision. Instead of dismantling development-focused institutions, IYC Secretary-General Maobuye Nangi Obu stressed that the Niger Delta should have more specialised projects, ministries, intervention agencies, and programs.
Obu said that rather than being dissolved, the ministry may have been restructured to handle particular area issues if overlapping functions were a problem. Obu emphasised the Niger Delta’s ongoing drawbacks, which include difficult terrain and environmental damage brought on by oil development.
In order to solve the issues facing the region, the IYC calls on Tinubu to recognize the importance of the Niger Delta Ministry, restore it with a distinct mission, and establish new initiatives, ministries, and programs.
