Russia has warned the West that allowing Ukraine to launch Western weapons deep into Russia could lead to war. The US was warned that World War Three would not be limited to Europe. Ukraine attacked Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6, causing the largest foreign attack since World War Two. President Vladimir Putin promised Russia would honorably respond. Sergei Lavrov accused the West of “asking for trouble” and intensifying the conflict in Ukraine by considering Ukrainian requests to lift a ban on foreign-supplied weaponry.
Putin has warned of the possibility of a far wider battle involving the world’s major nuclear powers ever since his invasion of Ukraine in 2022, even though he has stated that Russia does not wish to engage in combat with the NATO alliance, which is led by the United States.
Lavrov speaks to reporters in Moscow saying “We are now confirming once again that playing with fire – and they are like small children playing with matches – is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country,”.
“Americans unequivocally associate conversations about the Third World War as something that, God forbid, if it happens, will affect Europe exclusively.”
Russia was “clarifying” its nuclear doctrine, Lavrov continued.
The president may use nuclear weapons “when the very existence of the state is put under threat,” according to Russia’s 2020 nuclear doctrine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized the Kremlin’s threats of nuclear war or retribution, stating that Ukraine’s weaponry limitations prevented it from striking specific Russian military sites. Zelenskiy urged allies to make more strategic choices in supporting Kyiv during the conflict, highlighting the limitations of the Kremlin’s threats.
