EndBadGovernanceinNigeria: A Kano vandalism case remands 632 cases to the court

For allegedly vandalizing public and government property at the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria rally, a Kano State Mobile Court has ordered the custody of 632 protest participants.

Criminal conspiracy, stealing, unauthorized assembly, inciting disruption, trespassing, and mischief by fire were the charges brought against the defendants.

Salisu Tahir, the State Director of Public Prosecution, informed the court that the defendants had committed the claimed charges on August 1st during the protest. He said that the defendants trespassed and damaged state government and public property on the same day as the nationwide demonstration #EndBadGovernance.

The DPP told the court “The defendants broke into people’s shops and looted their goods,”

In court, the prosecution stated that the offences violated Penal Code sections 97, 287, 229, 336, 349, and 247.

A few of the accused entered guilty pleas, while others entered not guilty pleas.

The court, which was presided over by three senior judicial officials, postponed the hearing until August 19th after issuing the remand order.
