Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, no longer has the authority to name district and village chiefs in the state thanks to the signing of the Sokoto Local Government and Chieftaincy Law by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
Following the state House of Assembly’s passage of six Executive Bills, Governor Aliyu gave an explanation of the modifications’ purpose during the signing ceremony. They are meant to remove any ambiguities or inconsistencies with the Nigerian Constitution. He made it clear that the modifications are meant to advance good governance rather than to specifically target any person or group.
According to Aliyu, Sokoto has changed a number of laws from earlier administrations in an effort to promote prosperity and peace, just like other states. Although he acknowledged that the proposed revisions may cause conflict, he reminded the public that his administration remains committed to upholding the law.
The governor gave his word that his administration would keep the ambitions of the people in mind and make sure that all legislation is in line with the country’s constitution. He expressed his gratitude to the state House of Assembly members for their “maturity and patriotism” in addressing the amendments and reaffirmed his pledge to work with the Sultanate Council and traditional rulers for the good of the state and country.
In addition, Governor Aliyu thanked the Sokoto people for their constant support and asked for their continuous cooperation in order to meet the administration’s development objectives.
He said;
“It is well-known that in every society, laws are enacted and amended to suit the needs of the time and the interests of the governed, in line with current circumstances.
“In Nigeria, we have witnessed a series of constitutional amendments to give the country laws that ensure peace, tranquility, and socio-political development.
“Some reactions were politically motivated, while others were made ignorantly without proper inquiry into the details and intentions of the amendments.
“I appreciate our Ulama for their concern, but remind them that they represent Allah’s Messenger. They should not allow lazy politicians to use them for political gains.
“Whenever we encounter any law that does not serve the interests of our people, we will replace it with one that protects their interests.”
