The Nigerian Navy has been praised by Senate President Godswill Akpabio for enhancing maritime security and intensifying the fight against crude oil theft in the nation.
In honor of the Nigerian Navy’s retired senior officers of Flag Rank, Akpabio delivered the commendation on Friday during the Regimental Dinner held in Abuja.
He applauded the Nigerian Navy’s commanders and ratings for their efforts to stop crude oil theft.
According to Akpabio, the initiative has decreased illicit refining facilities, illegal bunkering, and the smuggling of products and drugs. It has also boosted oil output.
He said that the navy’s unwavering efforts in stopping the evildoings threatening Nigeria’s economy were the reason for the achievement.
But he issues a challenge to the Navy to keep going and step up its efforts to protect the Nigerian marine environment.
He said “The nation looks up to you and expects nothing short of professionalism which you have exhibited thus far.
“Be assured that the National Assembly will support you with all processes needed to succeed.”
The Senate President expressed gratitude to the retiring senior commanders for their selfless commitment to the country’s defense.
“Nonetheless, we are assured that you will continue to contribute towards the development of the Nigerian Navy and the country at large.
“My speech will, however, not be complete without remembering your colleagues who lost their lives in the line of maritime operations and the service of our dear country,” he said.
Prior to this, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), stated that the retiring officers had demonstrated honor, bravery, and dedication throughout their careers.
He said “I must add that the Nigerian navy has rejigged her operations particularly by launching Operation DELTA SANITY to curb crude oil theft.
“This has led to the dismantling of several illegal oil refining sites in the Niger Delta region.
“According to Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, crude oil production rose from 1.08 million barrels per day in July 2023 to 1.427 million barrels per day in January 2024.
“This represents an increase of 319,000 barrels within the last six months.
“This is a testament to the positive outcome of the renewed drive by the Nigerian navy towards ensuring that oil contributes optimally to national development,” he added.
Ogalla expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support of the navy and veterans’ care.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), regimental dinners are a military custom meant to honor worthy officers and troops on significant occasions and to encourage regimentation.
The Chief of Staff of the armed forces, Gen. Christopher Musa, many members of the National Assembly, and the Minister of State for Defense, Bello Matawalle, were present at the function.
