Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian head of state and one of the founding fathers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has declined a request to help in the region’s crisis.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the ECOWAS Commission, invited journalists to a “press conference” with Gowon at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja.
He intended to speak about the present state of things at the regional level, including coups and the Republic of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso’s threat to leave the organization, as well as possible long-term remedies to the problem.
